My chicken coop is about 8 x 8 x 7 with about a 60 degree slope. This leaves me with about 320 cubed feet because of the slope and about 64 square feet on the floor. Because I let the chickens free range and they only lay, eat occasionally, and sleep in the coop, I could have as many as probably 20 birds at a time depending. They take turns in the nesting boxes and seem to have no problem making their way back to the nesting box every day to lay their eggs. I covered have of the coop with tin for weather protection and left the other half open for ventilation. I hung the feeder toward the back where it wouldn't get wet.
If I could do it over (and I may do another one) I would change the design a bit making the whole thing covered. Sunlight helps hens lay and this would be achieved using transparent material for half of the coop. Ventilation would come by sloped eaves on the wings where I would put the mesh. Also in the sloped eaves I would be the nesting boxes instead of at the back.
Ask questions, leave a commet.
